This particular Suzani demonstrates amazing embroidery workmanship. It is a one-of-a-kind vintage Suzani that was handmade in Uzbekistan during the 2nd half of the 20th century. Additionally, all our vintage Suzanis are in excellent condition showing only minor signs of wear, if any. Suzanis can be used as wall hangings, throws, tablecloths, draperies, or bed coverings. They also look great when used as furniture upholstery or when made into pillows.
Condition: We inspect each Suzani by hand, returning only with those that meet our high quality standards. Less than one out of ten make the cut. However, because these are vintage Suzanis, they may show minor signs of wear, if any. You might even see pencil or pen marks from the original design sketch on the fabric.
Vintage Suzanis from Uzbekistan have origins as storied as the motifs that cover their surface. Rich in symbolism, Suzanis contain geometric patterns, flowers, and other natural elements, which all hold meanings that are embroidered into stylized shapes that vary according region, tribe, family, and the artisans. Suzanis from Nurata, Samarkand, Bukhara, Shahrisyabz, Tashkent, and Fergana, for example, all differ with respect to color, material, pattern, and the type of stitches used. Even the colors impart a deeper meaning: yellows and oranges represent knowledge; red means fire and sun, blues embody the sky, and greens from the usma plant represent spring and youth.
Suzani is one of the most popular folk arts in Uzbekistan, a word that not only means "needlework", but also refers to the large panels covered with this decorative embroidery. These hand-embroidered vintage Suzanis are infused with the character that only comes from everyday use. Perhaps created by a bride-to-be to show her devotion to her betrothed and then in lean times bartered away to a traveling Gypsy for money or household necessities pulled from the depths of his donkey cart. The story of each of these Suzanis is as rich as their colors, and as intricate as the designs that cover their surfaces. |
